Safety Footwear

S1 shoes offer basic protection: closed heel, antistatic properties, and energy absorption. S2 adds water resistance to the upper. S3 is the highest common rating — it includes a penetration-resistant midsole and cleated outsole, making it suitable for construction, heavy industry, and outdoor sites where sharp objects or wet terrain are a risk.

The internationally recognised standard is EN ISO 20345, which covers impact resistance (200 joule toe cap), compression resistance, and slip resistance. Most reputable brands sold in the region — including Delta Plus and Portwest — are certified to this standard.

Always check the product label for the EN ISO 20345 marking before purchasing for a regulated worksite.

Most manufacturers recommend replacing safety footwear every 12 months under regular daily use, or immediately if the sole, toe cap, or upper shows visible damage. Worn or cracked soles compromise slip resistance; a damaged toe cap no longer meets impact ratings. When in doubt, replace — foot injuries are costly and preventable.

Steel toe caps are heavier but highly durable and cost-effective. Composite toe caps (made from fibreglass, carbon fibre, or plastic) are lighter, non-conductive, and metal-detector friendly — making them preferable for electrical work, airports, and prolonged wear. Both meet EN ISO 20345 impact requirements when certified.
